Accountable beings such as the followers of Christ must walk in the light that shines upon them. They do this as exemplifying the goodness of God revealed in His Word and by His Spirit.
God sends rays of light to show humans their true condition. Thus if they refuse to walk in the light, it is evident that they take pleasure in darkness. They avoid the light, lest their deeds should be reproved.
Neglecting to practice the light is the reason many are in a state of great spiritual weakness.
God requires of His people according to the grace and truth given them. All His righteous demands must be fully met and they will denounce the world.
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him….If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him. 1 John 21:5, 29.
If humans will walk with God, He will hide them in the cleft of the Rock. Thus hidden, they can see God, even as Moses saw Him.
By the power and light that He imparts they can comprehend more and accomplish more than their finite judgment had deemed possible.
Here is the warning from the pan of inspiration if they fail to do this. Their light becomes darkness, and their darkness is great according to the degree that their light was abundant.
But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! Matthew 6:23.
Walk in the light of His word
The precious Word of God is to be a lamp to your path and a light to your feet. It is your privilege to walk in the light and to grow up to the full stature of men and women in Christ Jesus.
This is the result of sanctification through the truth as it is in Jesus. And this is what God requires of all.
The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. Psalm 119:130.
Those who are preparing for the last great day will go forward in accordance with the accumulated light. It shines upon them from the prophecies and from the lessons of Christ and the apostles.
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:20.
The truth of Scriptures will be witnesses against God’s messengers in the last great day, if rejected.
They saw the light, but for various reasons in harmony with the carnal heart, would not receive it. In other words they would not receive the truth that was given to save them.
For instance, God gave light in regard to the true Sabbath. He will judge the world in righteousness before His second coming.
Therefore, let us seek the Lord earnestly for humility of heart, that He may teach us how to walk in the light of His counsel and understand His word. Furthermore how to accept it and put it into practice.
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts. 2 Peter 1:19.
Fix your eyes upon Jesus
Jesus is the light of the world and He declares:
He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12.
Follow Christ and He will lead you in the path of peace, purity and holiness. Christ has led the way in this path. He is the true Shepherd. As following Him you avoid the bypaths and dangerous pitfalls.
You can show to the world that His grace is sufficient for your victory over sin as He promised. When you follow the light, walking in the path of truth, you will reflect the rays of glory, and be like a city set upon a hill that cannot be hid. Matthew 5:14.
God is light, and in him is no darkness at all…if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.1 John 1:5-7.
The work of sanctification cannot go on in the heart while the light on any part of the truth is rejected or neglected.
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6.
The sanctified soul will not be content to remain in ignorance, but will desire to walk in the light and to seek for greater light.
Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. Ephesians 5:14.
You need to grow continually in grace and in the knowledge of the truth. Self must be overcome. Every defect of character must be discerned in God’s great mirror – the Law of God.
If you are condemned, there is but one course for you to pursue: you must repent toward God because of the transgression of His law, and have faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ as the one who only can cleanse from sin.
Walk in the light while you have the light
It is not for lack of knowledge that God’s people are now perishing.
They will not be condemned because they do not know the way, the truth, and the life. Nevertheless, the:
- truth that has reached their understanding
- light which has shone on the soul
has not been cherished, but neglected, or refused to be led by, will condemn them.
Jesus said to his disciples:
Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you; for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. John 12:35, 36.
These words apply to us as well. Great privileges belong to the people of God. Great light has been given them, that they may attain to their high calling in Christ Jesus.
He said: Ye are the light of the world. Matthew 5:14.
Then how important that we place ourselves directly under the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness.
I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles. Isaiah 42:6.
Those who are sanctified through the truth will be bright and shining lights in the world.
Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name. Psalm 86:11.
To walk in the light means to walk:
- in the Spirit, uprightly, and in the way of the Lord
- by faith, in love, and in the truth
- in the newness of life and perfecting holiness in the fear of God
God calls upon His people to act
Every one who professes godliness should:
- seek to put away every wrong
- confess to God every secret sin and afflict the soul before Him
- investigate the motives of every action with great humility
- search out every hidden thing, knowing that the eye of God reads all
- exert will-power in an earnest endeavor to represent Christ in sweetness of character
- advance in spiritual attainments through the gift of the Holy Spirit
Walk in the light, and the peace and joy that shine in the face of Jesus will be reflected in you. Jesus lives and His promise is:
Why is it that humans are so unwilling to trust Christ who created mankind. Moreover, who can by His touch, word, or look heal all manner of disease?
Who is more worthy of our trust than the One who made such a great sacrifice for our redemption?
If the professed followers of Christ would, with purity of heart, exercise as much faith in the promises of God as they repose in Satanic agencies, they would realize in soul and body the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit.
Christ condescended to take our nature, that He might reach to the very depths of human woe and degradation. Furthermore, to elevate and ennoble our race.
With such evidence of His incomparable love, how can any turn from the God of light and power, and give heed to Satan – the author of all our woes?
We are builders for God
We must build upon the foundation which He has prepared for us. No one is to build upon his own foundation, independent of the plan which God has devised.
Furthermore, everyone who professes to be illuminated by the Spirit of God in this time will be required to enlighten others.
For none of us liveth to himself. Romans 14:7.
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind…Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Matthew 22:37, 39.
It is the will of God that those who engage in His work shall be subject to one another. His worship must be conducted with consistency, unity, and sound judgment.
God is our only sufficient helper.
The laws which govern His people, their principles of thought and action, are received from Him through His word and Spirit.
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise. Ephesians 1:13.
When God’s Word is loved and obeyed, His children walk in the light, and there is no occasion of stumbling in them. They do not accept the world’s low standard, but work from the Bible standpoint.
The light in the warning messages of Revelation 14
The work of preaching the gospel has not been committed to angels, but has been entrusted to mankind.
They were those who had taken heed to the sure word of prophecy, the light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise. 2 Peter 1:19.
And the Lord revealed to them the great things of the kingdom:
Those who turn away from the light which God has given are left in darkness. Those who walk in darkness cannot love God or sincerely desire to glorify Him.
They are not enlightened to discern the excellence of heavenly things, and therefore cannot truly love them. The Savior declares – He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12.
Whoever is purposely seeking to do God’s will and heeding the light already given will receive greater light. The same will be guided into all truth. The result of an acceptance of these messages is given in the words:
Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. Revelation 14:12.
God commissions us to communicate the light of His Word to the world. If we spread the light given us by diffusing it to others, we shall have increased light.
For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. Matthew 25:29.
It is at our own option as to what we shall do with the light God has given. We may walk in the light or refuse to follow in the steps of Christ, and thus extinguish our light.
Rejoicing is the very keynote of the Word of God for all who receive Him.
Because they have the Light of life. Light brings gladness and joy, and that joy is expressed in the life and the character.
Light shines upon all people. Though the light will not save them, unless they consent to be saved by it. The whole earth is to be lightened with the glory of God. But how difficult for some to see and acknowledge the light and be converted, that I, Christ says, should heal them.
The atmosphere of selfishness, pride, formality, and self-righteousness surrounds their souls. Therefore, it is very difficult for them to discern light as light and appreciate it.
Some walk away from the light into darkness, and how much greater is the darkness that enshrouds their souls because they have had the light. Refusing to walk in the light, they stumble at most precious things.
