Accountable beings such as the followers of Christ must walk in the light that shines upon them. They do this as exemplifying the goodness of God reviled in His Word. God requires of His people according to the grace and truth given them. All His righteous demands must be fully met and they will denounce the world. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him….If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him. 1 John 21:5, 29.
Here is the warning from the pan of inspiration if they fail to do this. Their light becomes darkness, and their darkness is great according to the degree that their light was abundant. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! Neglecting to practice the light is the reason many are in a state of great spiritual weakness.
Walk in the light of His word
The precious word of God is to be a lamp to your path and a light to your feet. It is your privilege to walk in the light and to grow up to the full stature of men and women in Christ Jesus. This is the result of sanctification through the truth and this is what God requires of all. Those who are preparing for the last great day will go forward in accordance with the accumulated light. It shines upon them from the prophecies, and from the lessons of Christ and the apostles.
The truth which God’s messengers have presented by pen and by voice and the treasures of the word of God which, will, if rejected, be witnesses against them in the last great day. They saw the light, but for various reasons in harmony with the carnal heart, would not receive it. In other words they would not receive the truth that was given to save them.
For instance, God gave light in regard to the true Sabbath. He will judge the world in righteousness before His second coming. Let us seek the Lord earnestly for humility of heart, that He may teach us how to walk in the light of His counsel and understand His word. Furthermore how to accept it and put it into practice.
Fix your eyes upon Jesus
Jesus is the light of the world and he declares – He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12
Follow Christ and He will lead you in the path of peace, purity and holiness. Christ has led the way in this path. He is the true Shepherd. As following Him you avoid the bypaths and dangerous pitfalls. You can show to the world that His grace is sufficient for your victory over sin as He promised. When you follow the light, walking in the path of truth, you will reflect the rays of glory, and be like a city set upon a hill that cannot be hid. God is light, and in him is no darkness at all…if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.1 John 1:5-7
The work of sanctification cannot go on in the heart while the light on any part of the truth is rejected or neglected. The sanctified soul will not be content to remain in ignorance, but will desire to walk in the light and to seek for greater light. You need to grow continually in grace and in the knowledge of the truth. Self must be overcome. Every defect of character must be discerned in God’s great mirror. If you are condemned, there is but one course for you to pursue: you must repent toward God because of the transgression of his law, and have faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ as the one who only can cleanse from sin.
Walk in the light while you have the light
It is not for lack of knowledge that God’s people are now perishing. They will not be condemned because they do not know the way, the truth, and the life. The truth that has reached their understanding, the light which has shone on the soul, that has not been cherished, and which they have neglected, or refused to be led by, will condemn them.
Jesus said to his disciples: Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you; for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. John 12:35, 36. These words apply to us as well. Great privileges belong to the people of God. Great light has been given them, that they may attain to their high calling in Christ Jesus. He said: Ye are the light of the world. Matthew 5:14. Then how important that we place ourselves directly under the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness. Those who are sanctified through the truth will be bright and shining lights in the world.
To walk in the light means to walk:
- in the Spirit, uprightly, and in the way of the Lord
- by faith, in love, and in the truth
- in the newness of life and perfecting holiness in the fear of God
God calls upon His people to act
Every one who professes godliness should:
- seek to put away every wrong
- confess to God every secret sin and afflict the sou before Him
- investigate the motives of every action with great humility
- search out every hidden thing, knowing that the eye of God reads all
- exert will-power in an earnest endeavor to represent Christ in sweetness of character
- advance in spiritual attainments through the gift of the Holy Spirit
Walk in the light, and the peace and joy that shine in the face of Jesus will be reflected in you. Jesus lives and his promise is – According to your faith be it unto you. Matthew 9:29.
The light in the warning messages of Revelation 14
Here is a threefold message proclaimed by heavenly beings. This message is declared to be a part of the “everlasting gospel.” The work of preaching the gospel has not been committed to angels, but has been entrusted to men. They were those who had taken heed to the sure word of prophecy, the light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise. 2 Peter 1:19. They had been seeking the knowledge of God counting it better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. Proverbs 3:14. And the Lord revealed to them the great things of the kingdom. The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him; and he will show them his covenant. Psalm 25:14.
Those who turn away from the light which God has given are left in darkness. Those who walk in darkness cannot love God and sincerely desire to glorify Him. They are not enlightened to discern the excellence of heavenly things, and therefore cannot truly love them. The Savior declares – He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12. Whoever is purposely seeking to do God’s will and heeding the light already given will receive greater light. The same will be guided into all truth. The result of an acceptance of these messages is given in the words – Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. Revelation 14:12
God would employ us as agents to communicate the light of His Word to the world. If we improved the light given us by diffusing it to others, we shall have increased light. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. Matthew 25:29. It is at our own option as to what we shall do with the light God has given. We may walk in the light or refuse to follow in the steps of Christ, and thus extinguish our light. Rejoicing is the very keynote of the Word of God for all who receive Him. Why? Because they have the Light of life. Light brings gladness and joy, and that joy is expressed in the life and the character.
Light, precious light shines upon the people. Though the light will not save them, unless they consent to be saved by it. The whole earth is to be lightened with the glory of God. But how difficult for some to see and acknowledge the light and be converted, that I, Christ says, should heal them. The atmosphere of selfishness, pride, formality, and self-righteousness surrounds their souls, and it is very difficult for them to discern light as light and appreciate it. Some walk away from the light into darkness, and how much greater is the darkness that enshrouds their souls because they have had the light. Refusing to walk in the light, they stumble at most precious things.
We are builders for God
We must build upon the foundation which He has prepared for us. No one is to build upon his own foundation, independent of the plan which God has devised. It is the will of God that those who engage in His work shall be subject to one another. His worship must be conducted with consistency, unity, and sound judgment. God is our only sufficient helper. The laws which govern His people, their principles of thought and action, are received from Him through His word and Spirit. When His word is loved and obeyed, His children walk in the light, and there is no occasion of stumbling in them. They do not accept the world’s low standard, but work from the Bible standpoint.
