In the creation of man was manifested the agency of a personal God. When God had made man in His image, the human form was perfect in all its arrangements, but it was without life. Then a personal, self-existing God breathed into that form the breath of life, and man became a living, breathing, intelligent being.
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground… Genesis 2:7 (KJV)
Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them …and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Psalms 139:16; Genesis 2:7 (KJV)
Through Jesus Christ a personal God created man and endowed him with intelligence and power
Above all lower orders of being, God designed that man, the crowning work of His creation, should express His thought and reveal His glory. This living God is worthy of our thought, praise, and adoration as the Creator of the world and as the Creator of man. We are to praise God, for we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
While we may discern the working of God in the things He has created, these things are not God. Nature’s voice is heard in its influence upon the senses. Her voice, the Word declares, is heard to the end of the world. The physical creation testifies of God and Jesus Christ as the great Creator of all things. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. John 1:3, 4 (KJV)
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Psalm 19:1-3 (KJV).
God is a spirit and yet He is a personal being
God is a personal being for man was made in His image. As a personal being God has revealed Himself in His Son. Jesus, the outshining of the Father’s glory, and the express image of His person – Hebrews 1:3, was on earth found in fashion as a man.
As a personal Savior, He:
- came to the world
- ascended on high
- intercedes in the heavenly courts
Before the throne of God in our behalf ministers One like the Son of man. Daniel 7:13 (KJV)
The greatness of God is to us incomprehensible. The Lord’s throne is in heaven – Psalm 11:4 (KJV); yet by His Spirit He is everywhere present. He has an intimate knowledge of, and a personal interest in all the works of His hand.
It was the Maker of all things who in the material world provided that every desire implanted should be met. It was He who created the human soul, with its capacity for knowing and for loving. And He is not in Himself such as to leave the demands of the soul unsatisfied. It is not enough to believe in law and force, in things that have no pity, and never hear the cry for help. We need to know of an almighty arm that will hold us up, of an infinite Friend that pities us. We need to clasp a hand that is warm, to trust in a heart full of tenderness. And even so God has in His word revealed Himself.
Had God desired to be represented as dwelling personally in the things of nature? For instance – in the flower, tree, and the spire of grass. Would not Christ have spoken of this to His disciples when He was on the earth? But never in the teaching of Christ is God thus spoken of. Christ and the apostles taught clearly the truth of the existence of a personal God.
